South Runway Maintenance Schedule

YVR runways require regular, ongoing maintenance. Because of its heavy use, the South Runway requires more repairs and closure time.

Runway End Safety Areas Project and South Runway Maintenance

In May 2016, the Airport Authority began the second-year of a three-year project to construct Runway End Safety Areas (RESAs) on the South Runway and the Crosswind Runway. RESAs are specialized areas at the end of a runway designed to protect the traveling public and to reduce the severity of damage to an aircraft in the unlikely event of an overrun or undershoot.

The RESA project and the annual runway maintenance program will be carried out from May 8 to September 17, 2016. During this time period, the South Runway will be closed six nights a week (Sun-Fri) between 10 PM and 7 AM and the North Runway will be used for all arrivals and departures.

Starting on Tuesday, October 11 for up to 20 nights, the South Runway will be closed six nights a week (Sun-Fri) between midnight and 7 AM for detailed surveying of the runway.  During these closures the North Runway will be used for all arrivals and departures. This work is weather dependent and on nights when weather is a factor the South Runway will remain open for all arrivals and departures.

There is no work planned to occur on Saturday nights and statutory holidays.

2016 Monthly Maintenance

Continuing our runway maintenance requirements, the Airport Authority will be closing the south runway (Runway 08R-26L) on selected nights each month in support of critical maintenance works on the runway and on runway supporting systems. This work is in addition to the regular annual south runway closure during the summer. Monthly dates scheduled for closures are as follows:

  • January 12
  • February 17
  • March 8
  • April 13, 14
  • December 13

This work will require the closure to occur between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am. During these hours, landings and take-offs will be moved to the north runway to allow maintenance crews to access the work areas. The Airport Authority acknowledges that some communities may be disturbed by the changes to runway usage during the closures; however, this work is necessary to maintain a high standard of safety for the travelling public. If you would like more information, please contact YVR Noise Management at noise@yvr.ca.
