Ecosystem Health

Our goal is to reduce our impact on the natural environment. We will expand these efforts until our projects create a net positive affect on Sea Island biodiversity.

YVR follows the Impact Assessment Act for all projects on airport lands to ensure our operations align with the health and well-being of the natural world and sustainable design practices are in place.

YVR proudly become the first airport in North America to achieve Salmon-Safe certification in 2016. This certification acknowledges our ongoing efforts and commitment to our land and water management practices.

As outlined in our 2020-2024 Environmental Management Plan (EMP), we will continue to enhance and protect the ecosystem health of Sea Island and aim to re-certify our Salmon-Safe designation. Our initiatives include:

  • Completing a habitat enhancement project along the Fraser River
  • Continuing our partnership with Musqueam Indian Band to enhance the natural habitat, protect salmon and remove invasive plant species
  • Identifying and protecting archaeological resources on Sea Island.
  • Maintaining our comprehensive glycol management program
