FAQ
How do you determine what the living wage is?
The living wage is the hourly rate of pay that enables wage earners living in a household to:
• Feed, clothe and provide shelter for their family
• Promote healthy child development
• Participate in activities that are an ordinary element of life in the community
• Avoid the chronic stress of living in poverty
This hourly rate is calculated every year by the Living Wage for Families BC, based on the living expenses of a family of four with two children aged 4 and 7, with both parents working full time (35 hours per week). The rate is comprised of their basic wage, extended health and dental benefits, sick pay, vacation pay, and taxable benefits such as transportation, education and child care.
What will your annual review entail?
We recognize that any living wage rate will require regular evaluation going forward. As such, we will review the wage on an annual basis to ensure it is achieving the goals of the Living Wage Policy and is aligned with legislated wage requirements.
What business partners does YVR’s Living Wage Policy apply to?
As a certified Living Wage Employer, we are committed to paying our employees at or above the designated living wage for Metro Vancouver. Companies which provide direct contracted services to the Airport Authority in support of operations and maintenance, such as janitorial, landscaping and traffic management, are also required to pay a living wage to their employees at the airport. We encourage you to partner with us in our vision to be a Living Wage Airport.
