Following the discovery of cultural shell deposits on August 2, 2023, Musqueam Indian Band and YVR have jointly identified and are protecting the area where Musqueam belongings have been found. A 100-meter buffer zone has also been established around the site.
Work is ongoing with Musqueam’s Archaeology Department to identify and further analyze findings.
Regular maintenance and construction activities will continue outside the cultural shell deposit area and its 100-meter buffer zone, with the ongoing oversight of archaeologists.
As part of its Sustainability and Friendship Agreement, Musqueam and YVR are committed to identifying and protecting archeological resources. This includes using and updating historic and recent maps of Sea Island to safeguard key areas of archaeological interest and outline protocols for chance finds and how they will be handled.
