YVR releases August performance data and forecast for the week ahead

Vancouver International Airport / Aéroport international de Vancouver (YVR) today released operational performance data and its latest weekly forecast to provide insight for passengers who are travelling through the airport. 

In August, YVR welcomed a total of 2,101,435 passengers, making it the busiest month since the start of the global pandemic and bringing YVR’s year-to-date total at month’s end to approximately 11 million passengers. During this same period in 2019, the airport welcomed 2,511,190 passengers for the month and a total of approximately 17 million passengers by the end of August. 

Of the passengers who travelled through YVR in August, 1,063,434 were departing and 1,038,001 were arriving. A total of approximately 1,011,332 bags were processed with these passengers, 707,509 of which were outbound bags. Service delivery for outbound baggage at YVR is tracking at a 99 per cent success rate, meaning nearly all baggage is processed on time and departs alongside the passenger from the airport.

In addition, data provided by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) indicates that approximately 81.4 per cent of passengers travelling from YVR in August were screened within 15 minutes.

With the peak summer travel months now behind and looking ahead to the week of  
September 6 – 11, YVR is expecting an average of approximately 61,000 passengers per day for a total of 369,752 for the week, connecting these travellers to 93 destinations across Canada and the world.

Within this week, Tuesday and Sunday are expected to be the busiest travel days with 62,647 and 63,720 passengers expected, respectively. During this same period in 2019, YVR welcomed an average of 71,299 passengers daily.

  • Coming soon! Travellers heading to the U.S. will have the option to submit their passport and customs declaration information through the secure Mobile Passport Control app in advance of their trip, reducing passport control inspection time and overall wait time.  

Current travel reminders include:

  • Please arrive at the airport early—two hours ahead of scheduled domestic flights and three hours ahead for U.S. and international flights. Masks remain mandatory in the terminal and onboard your flight.  
  • All travellers arriving to Canada from abroad are required to complete ArriveCAN. At YVR, travellers can save time with Customs and Immigration by using the Advance Declaration option in ArriveCAN to electronically submit their declaration information before arriving in Vancouver, reducing processing time spent in the Customs Hall.   
  • The Government of Canada has resumed mandatory random testing for travellers who qualify as fully vaccinated and are arriving in Canada from an international destination, including the U.S. Travellers who have been selected for testing will receive an email with information to arrange their test as physical testing is no longer conducted at the airport.
