YVR Celebrates New Airline Partner, Hainan Airlines

New service marks first route to Tianjin and Shenzhen from Canada

Today, Vancouver International Airport / Aéroport international de Vancouver (YVR) celebrated the arrival of Hainan Airlines and its inaugural flight between YVR and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZX) via Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN). The twice-weekly service marks the first route to Shenzhen and Tianjin from Canada and is Tianjin’s first connection to North America.

“We are thrilled to welcome Hainan Airlines to YVR. Coinciding with the Canada-China Year of Tourism, the year-round service will further link Canada to two exciting cities in China,” said Craig Richmond, President & CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “YVR now has the most Mainland Chinese carriers in North America and, when combined with Air Canada’s existing services to this important market, we are well established as a leading connecting hub between Asia and the Americas.”

The route will be operated on a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft with a seat configuration of 36 Business class and 177 Economy class seats. Hainan Airlines will depart from YVR at 11:30 a.m. and arrive at TSN at 2:15 p.m. (+1), before continuing the journey. The flight arrives at SZX at 7:45 p.m. On return, it departs SZX at 7:25 a.m. and arrives at TSN at 10:25 a.m. before departing Tianjin and arriving at YVR at 9:30 a.m.

“As 2018 has been proclaimed the Canada-China Year of Tourism, the launch of this new flight service complements B.C.’s tourism focus in China and further strengthens the economic and cultural ties between our two countries,” said B.C. Minister of State for Trade, George Chow. “Having Hainan Airlines touch down in Vancouver adds more air passenger routes from China to B.C., helping to attract investment, benefiting B.C. businesses and ultimately creating good jobs for people throughout the province.”

The new service has direct economic benefits to the region. The operational and tourism impacts contribute $12.4 million in economic output and more than $6 million in GDP for B.C.

“The Shenzhen-Tianjin-Vancouver service will further enhance Hainan Airlines’ network in Canada,” added Yang Fei, General Manager of Marketing, Hainan Airlines. “The new route will provide passengers with more travel options and convenience, and facilitate prosperous development between our two countries.”

New services such as this are made possible thanks to YVR’s five-year airline rates and charges program, ConnectYVR. The program offers some of the lowest landing fees to airlines in order to attract and incent them to grow sustainably at YVR.
