“Mas Mexico!” Aeromexico adds more flights to Vancouver

Mexican airline plans 85 per cent growth since launching route nine months ago

Vancouver International Airport / Aéroport international de Vancouver (YVR) today applauded Aeromexico for announcing additional thrice-weekly round-trip flights between Mexico City and YVR.  Starting Thursday, December 1, the airline will offer 20 flights each week on the route, up from 14 – a weekly seat increase of 85 per cent since Aeromexico launched the route in 2015.

“YVR congratulates Aeromexico on the success of the route,” said Craig Richmond, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority. “The new service has been performing strongly to date, with growth predicted for the future because of the Canadian government’s foresight in easing visa restrictions for Mexican nationals.”

Aeromexico launched daily YVR flights in December 2015 using a 124-seat Boeing 737-700, before upgrading to a 160-seat Boeing 737-800. The most recent changes bring Aeromexico’s total weekly seat offering to 3,200 – an increase of 85 per cent since the inaugural flight. The new flights are timed to offer Aeromexico’s passengers quick and convenient connections to and from the airline’s Latin and South American flights.

“Canada’s recent announcement to drop visa requirements for Mexicans, and Aeromexico’s interest in responding to the needs of our customers encouraged us to add the new flights to further consolidate the airline’s presence in this North American country,” said Jorge Goytortua, Corporate Sales Director, Aeromexico. “We know that Mexicans enjoy traveling to Vancouver, and Canadians are also enticed by the warm weather of Mexico’s beach destinations and its charming colonial cities, which is why we decided to offer our Canadian passengers greater connectivity options to our extensive route network spanning 45 cities across Mexico.”

Mexico is Canada’s fifth-largest source for inbound travel. Starting December 1, the Government of Canada will lift visa requirements for leisure and business travel, a move YVR’s CEO touted would increase travel to the city. Vancouver hosted more than 87,000 overnight visitors from Mexico in 2015. Tourism Vancouver expects this number to grow to 131,000 overnight visitors by 2018.
