Now that YVR has achieved carbon neutrality, we have our sights set on reaching goals that reduce our impact on the environment even more! As outlined in our Annual Strategic Plan, we’ve accelerated our goal of becoming net zero by 20 years. We’re now aiming to have net zero emissions by 2030 rather than 2050.
In order to achieve this ambitious goal, we have identified six decarbonization pathways to achieve our net zero target and will be pursuing:
- Using renewable fuels, like renewable natural gas and renewable diesel
- Electrifying our fleet by converting the rest of our light duty vehicles
- Green electrification through our work with BC Hydro on possible 100% green electricity offerings
- On-site renewable energy supply, including more solar photovoltaics
- Building conservation retrofits, such as improving lighting, building envelope and air systems efficiencies
- Closing the remaining gap through carbon removals and sequestration
While we do not have direct control over emissions from outside of our operations—those of our partners and the airport community—we recognize that we can also support our partners in reducing their emissions. This collective effort will drive performance and sustainability across our supply chain, which ultimately benefits our industry as well as our community and the surrounding environment.
