Top 5 Summer Edition (Part 1)

Another summer in Vancouver calls for another blog series from the YVR team! This year, we’re changing it up a bit. Rather than bringing you the highlights and recaps of community festivals after they’ve occurred, we’re showing you what we’ll be looking out for prior to the event. We’ll bring you the TOP 5 things you’ll want to see at each festival.

The first of our community festivals we’ll be attending is the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival. This three-day festival brings dragon boat racing and other fun activities to the False Creek area. Here are the TOP 5 activities we’re most excited about:

1. Soaking up the live music and performances

We’re going to be hitting up the 102.7 THE PEAK Main Stage and the Concord Community Stage for some entertainment throughout the weekend. The Main Stage will showcase some of BC and Canada’s best new indie bands and fusion cultural performances. If you’re someone who seeks thrilling shows, check out the Concord Community Stage for circus performances and various workshops to teach you how to replicate their tricks.

2. Grabbing a bite and relaxing at the Red Truck Patio

A day in the sun can often lead to a craving for a cold drink. Why not head over to the Main Stage Zone where you’ll find the Red Truck Patio and various local food trucks to quench your thirst and hunger. A big bonus is having the live music right by you while you relax and take in the views of the surrounding sea and mountains.

3. Checking out the activities in the Family Zone

The Dragon Boat Festival is a great way to get the family out of the house and enjoying the sunshine. Bring your kids out to the Family Zone to learn more about the history of the dragon boat and take part in art and craft activities. They’ll hear stories about dragons and have a nice keep sake to take home.

4. Taking in the beauty of the Lion and Dragon Dances

The Hon Hsing Athletic Club will be bringing their lions and dragons out to the Dragon Boat Festival for some roaming entertainment. These dances are typically performed on important events to celebrate the occasion. Catch a glimpse of the vibrant lions and dragons as they perform at 6:15PM on Friday and between 12:30PM and 2:30PM on Saturday and Sunday.

5. Watching the races

It wouldn’t be a proper Dragon Boat Festival without some dragon boat racing. All through the weekend, various groups from around the world are going to be competing for their shot at glory. Races will be happening every 11 minutes during festival hours, so head over and cheer on some dragon boat racers.

That’s a wrap for our first blog post of the summer season, but don’t miss our Instagram stories. You can follow us @yvrairport where we will showcase all the activities above. We hope to see you there!
