If you’ve been to YVR recently you know that there is a lot of construction underway. We are busy expanding to meet our growing passenger demand while also improving the airport experience for everyone.
Over the next 20 years, YVR will complete 75 major projects, totaling $9.1 billion dollars—with $1.7 billion being spent in the next three years alone. We currently have over 30 active projects underway, ranging from small upgrades to large scale new builds—all just as important to keep operating an award-winning airport.
This construction has a direct impact not only to our operations, but also to our economy. These projects will support nearly 2,500 jobs on site this year and hundreds more offsite—and this will continue to increase over the next three years.
We have almost 70 engineers and related professions that are full time employees at YVR who oversee all of these projects. But we couldn’t do any of this without our amazing contractor partners—for 2018 to date, we’ve had more than 746,795 contractor person hours worked on construction capital projects at YVR. That is the equivalent of approximately eight people working 40 hours a week for their entire working lives (age 20-65)!
While a majority of direct economic impacts are realized in the Vancouver area, the total impacts benefit our whole province. We’re investing in a better airport—a thriving community asset that creates jobs, gives back and makes us all proud.
