Goalball: The Toughest Sport You've Never Heard About

Have you ever heard of Goalball? This fast-paced, unique sport was originally created to assist the rehabilitation of World War II veterans who had lost their vision in battle. Today, it is a Paralympic sport designed for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Goalball demands intense focus from its players on the court during the game’s rapid 12 minute halves. Players throw a ball with embedded bells, which allows them to utilize their ear-hand coordination. The point of the game is to get the ball across the court and into the other team’s net. Goalball is tough – it requires determination, grit and a high level of competitiveness.

YVR was proud to partner with Vancouver Goalball Club for the 2018 Vancouver Goalball Grand Slam. Nine teams from Canada, USA, Puerto Rico and Japan were able to compete against each other for victory. YVR was excited to join Vancouver Goalball Club in showing our community what it takes to be a competitor on the Goalball court. Check out the video we created to see the intensity in action!
