Craig's Corner: Involving You in Building a Better Airport

It’s not hard to tell that we are officially in YVR’s 100 busiest days ever. The airport is alive with passengers from around the world, many of whom are shopping at our stores and interacting with our staff. And whether transiting through YVR or stopping in Vancouver, these passengers are all contributing to YVR’s ambitious goal of 25 million passengers by 2020. 

Of course, during this summer period we recommend our busy season tips for passengers, as we noted at our recent travel tips event. This includes packing smart, arriving early and checking your flight status before heading to the airport. 

Yet this is also a time where we are looking at involving our passengers and communities more and more as we build a better, safer and more efficient airport. For instance, a highly functional washroom has a huge impact on the passenger experience. This is why we launched the World's Best Washroom Contest at YVR—and are looking for your ideas. 

Heated seats? Self-cleaning toilets? Flight screens? These are just some of the many suggestions we have heard from our passengers. We have also received our share of puns, submitted through #YVRwashroom. We welcome you to contribute your thoughts through the hashtag at Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, but please avoid writing them on the stall walls.

To emphasize our commitment to safety, YVR recently kicked-off Transport Canada’s Not A Bright Idea campaign, which aims to educate the public on the dangers of pointing lasers at aircraft. Throughout the summer, YVR will support this important campaign at our summer festivals and through our communications channels. And we are asking for your help: if you see someone pointing a laser at an aircraft, please don’t hesitate to call 911. 

We also recently launched consultation for YVR’s new Master Plan, which looks at our land use planning over the next 20 years. Called YVR 2057, the master plan helps outline how we will meet the needs of our stakeholders and the communities we serve in the future.

We are seeking public input on YVR 2057 and are including many levels of public engagement including in-person dialogues, stakeholder meetings, public forums, roundtables, summer festival tours and online outreach. We want your input and encourage you to check out our website, where you can take our survey and find out more information on YVR 2057. 

We aim to involve the community in our initiatives and are always looking at ways to improve. Don’t hesitate to let us know how we are doing and please spread the word about how everyone can contribute to a better airport.
