As part of ongoing construction for YVR’s new Parkade and Central Utilities Building, there is further preparatory work taking place in Chester Johnson Park starting tonight, May 21st. Work is expected to be completed early next week and will take place overnight, between 10pm and 6am. Please follow all road signage and flaggers in the area.
To facilitate the work, a bigger section of the park will be fenced off and closed. As part of this work, you may see the removal of trees, shrubs and boulders from the site. Biologists have assessed the area for healthy plant life and have also completed a nesting survey. YVR assesses all trees with the aim to retain, relocate or replace wherever possible. Due to size and age, we were unable to relocate the identified trees and shrubs needed to prepare the work area. The cut down trees will be provided to the Musqueam Indian Band for cultural use.
We are currently finalizing designs to renew and enhance this space, with added trees and greenery. The three ‘Ksan poles have been restored and will be re-installed with added areas for gathering and relaxation. The dog relief park will also be improved and the plaza opened up to allow for better visibility and access.
