Upgraded bridges and roads on Sea Island, new taxiways to improve aircraft movement and one of the largest GeoExchange energy systems in Canada are just some of the exciting enhancements outlined in the YVR 2037 Master Plan. Approved by the federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau earlier this year, the Master Plan will guide land use decision-making and facility development at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) over the next 20 years. It is now available to the public in both official languages.
YVR embarked on the multi-phase consultation process in 2015 and used a variety of tools and methods to gather information and facilitate meaningful dialogue with business partners, employees, travellers and local communities. Community and stakeholder feedback helped shape future enhancements in six key areas: ground access, environment, community amenities, airside and airspace, terminals and land use.
From bringing British Columbia’s majestic outdoors into the newest terminal expansion, to creating more community connections by integrating multi-use pathways and integrating technology to improve operational efficiency—over the next few years, many of the ideas developed with input from the community will be brought to life.
As outlined in the Master Plan, YVR will work with government and regional partners to improve transportation options to and from the airport. YVR will also explore the possibility of a new runway to welcome and connect more passengers and planes from around the world. Growth and expansion will be safely and sustainably managed, while providing continued economic well-being to the region, support for the community and protection for the environment.
Sea Island’s ecology will be respected, with plans for water quality monitoring and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste. Green space and other amenities will be incorporated into YVR’s development projects wherever possible, and the implementation of the Master Plan will be consistent with the obligations in the Musqueam Indian Band—YVR Airport Sustainability & Friendship Agreement.
