UPDATE: Russ Baker Way Repaving

July 23, 2013

An update on plans for repaving Russ Baker Way.

With a contractor and project plans now in place, Vancouver Airport Authority will proceed with Russ Baker Way repaving between Miller Road and Inglis drive as follows:

• July 24: Preliminary site preparation begins
• July 29: Contractors will officially break ground and begin repaving

Expected impact to local traffic includes:

• Reduced speed limits in construction zones

• Restricted local routes and detours

• Cycling lanes closed in either direction

• Intermittent lane closures

• Work performed at night wherever possible to minimize impact

• Digital signs identifying project and expected impacts

To complete the project as safely and quickly as possible, traffic lanes will remain open at all times, as follows:

• Two lanes will operate in each direction during the day (6 a.m. – 8 p.m.)
• One lane will operate in each direction at night (8 p.m. – 6 a.m.)

Drivers: Please allow for extra travel time if using Russ Baker Way, and check the City of Richmond’s traffic cameras for real-time reports before you go. Additionally, project updates will be available through the Airport Authority’s Twitter feed @yvrairport.

Cyclists: For safety reasons, the shoulder cycling lanes on Russ Baker Way will be closed in either direction during the project, as will Flight Path Park which is also undergoing a facelift this summer. The Airport Authority has developed an alternate route for cyclists, detailed in the map below. The entire route will be marked with detour signs.

Russ Baker Way is a major artery for motor vehicle traffic and cyclists. Once complete in early Fall 2013, the repaved road will offer safer and more reliable access to and from YVR, Richmond and Vancouver for neighbouring residents, local businesses, travellers and commuters.  Cyclists will also enjoy a new bike lane connecting Russ Baker Way to the community of Burkeville. Thank you for your patience as we work to keep our roadways safe and reliable for drivers and cyclists.
