Summer Runway Operations at YVR
May 31, 2013
In order to complete YVR’s annual runway maintenance requirements, as well as to manage the peak summer travel period, Vancouver Airport Authority has made a few necessary changes to its summer runway operations.
North runway departures – Summer 2013, beginning June 1
The north runway may be used for limited departures during the summer to help reduce aircraft delays during peak travel periods. If required, departures on the north runway will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m, but will primarily occur between 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m – YVR’s peak times. Use of the north runway for select departures will help reduce aircraft delays, decrease fuel burn and minimize air emissions caused by idling aircraft waiting to depart.
South runway maintenance – July 7 to August 30, 2013
As part of the Airport Authority’s comprehensive multi-year runway maintenance program, the south runway will be closed nightly between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. During this time, the north runway, which is typically closed between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., will be used for take-offs and arrivals. Runway maintenance cannot be completed during the day due to the level of aircraft activity requiring use of the south runway.
Runway maintenance is necessary to ensure the continued safe operation of aircraft at YVR. Runway maintenance includes rubber removal, pavement line marking, stormwater drainage system improvements, lighting maintenance and taxiway shoulder construction.
It is our goal to have the work completed as soon as possible. If the project work is completed prior to August 30, 2013, normal operations will resume with the usual nightly closure of the north runway.
We recognize that some communities may be disturbed by the changes to runway usage but these are necessary to ensure we meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency. We appreciate your support as we continue to prioritize safety and security. For more information on summer runway operations, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 604.207.7097.
