Runway Repair Program
Not unlike roads and highways, the runways at YVR require regular, ongoing maintenance to keep them in top working condition for the safe operation of aircraft. While regular maintenance is carried out on a daily basis, more comprehensive repairs and projects must be carried out each year that necessitates the closure of the south runway, which is normally used on a 24-hour basis.
Beginning November 7, 2012, the south runway will be closed the first Wednesday of every month from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for routine and preventative maintenance activities. During this time the north runway will be used for arrivals and departures as required.
Upcoming closure dates for 2012 and 2013 are as follows:
• Wednesday, November 7
• Wednesday, December 5
• Wednesday, January 9 (moved to second Wednesday due to busy holiday travel period)
• Wednesday, February 6
• Wednesday, March 6
• Wednesday, April 3
• Wednesday, May 1
• Wednesday, June 5
Summer is the busiest time at YVR for the travelling public and aircraft operations, but it is also during these months that the weather is best suited for paving and electrical projects. The work is completed over short, intensive periods of time to minimize disturbance to airport neighbours.
The summer runway repair schedule below provides a forecast of south runway closures at YVR for maintenance activities. The schedule is provided to help the community know when to expect changes to normal runway operations. Exact dates of future runway closures will be posted as project details and work schedules are confirmed.
This schedule is reviewed annually and updated as needed. Please check this site often for the latest updates.
2013: 8-week closure (July 7 – August 30)
2014: 3-week closure for annual maintenance, or up to 16-weeks if RESA proceeds
2015: 3-week closure for annual maintenance, or up to 16-weeks if RESA proceeds
2016: 3-week closure for annual maintenance, or up to 16-weeks if RESA proceeds
2017: 3-week closure for annual maintenance, or up to 16-weeks if RESA proceeds
*RESA (Runway End Safety Area) is a pending requirement from Transport Canada that would require additional area at the end of the runway to enhance safety, primarily during landings.
