What do the sport of curling and keeping an airport safe have in common? Hint: It’s nothing to do with brightly coloured pants.
But it does has everything to do with brooms and sweepers! We’re not talking about someone running around the airfield with a broom though - we’re talking about the OshKosh Sweeper, a high powered snow clearing machine.
Keeping the runways and aprons at YVR clean and clear during snowstorms is a big job. Whenever it snows at YVR, we can deploy an army of up to 80 trucks and machines to de-ice, blow, plow, melt and sweep allowing aircraft to safely take off and land.
This isn’t your grandma’s curling broom; we use a 475hp, 22 foot wide broom to clear up to 5,000 tonnes of snow an hour.
Here’s a fun fact: In 2009, we held a community contest to find a name for our new sweeper as many of our airfield trucks have names. The winning name was Sweep Lightning and is now displayed on the side of the truck.

Just ask for one at the Domestic Terminal Customer Care desk located before security on the Departures Level, 3. This sweeper card is just one of four trading cards (view our Snow Blower) available in our Abominable Snow Clearing Machines series.
