Like the popular Molson commercials suggest, hockey is most definitely a Canadian game. And that’s why the Richmond Olympic Oval embraced our national sport last weekend as part of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.
Representing British Columbia in this national celebration, the City of Richmond invited fans young and old to come down to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games venue for a special celebration, sponsored in part by Vancouver Airport Authority.
More than 16,000 people took part in last Saturday’s festivities, which included an Oval first: a Juniors hockey game between the Richmond Sockeyes and the North Delta Devils, as well as street hockey, air hockey – and everything in between.
But the most popular event was the celebrity game featuring special-guest Trevor Linden. About 5,000 people – including our very own Anne Murray, pictured with #16 below – watched and cheered Vancouver Canucks alumni and local celebrities on as part of this true community celebration.
