Each Year YVR proudly co-sponsors the Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports (VASS) Cup, a day of competitive ski and snowboard racing to raise funds for VASS’s snow sports program. This year, the YVR Team carved their way home to a bronze medal at the 7th Annual VASS Cup.
The warm weather and the sun-soaked slopes made the day at Grouse Mountain the perfect day to host the race. Different race teams were shortly paired off with athletes and members from VASS to start the day. YVR was lucky enough to be paired with some amazing athletes including former World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist, Kathy Kreiner-Phillips.
After a full day of skiing and riding, our YVR Team played a quick game of sledge hockey. We were amazed at how challenging this event was - let’s just say stopping wasn't our strong suit. But the best part of the day was the fun and exciting energy everyone had. The kinship among the athletes and volunteers and their strong sense of community was truly admirable and heartfelt. Thank you VASS for all the work you do to help the community and for inviting us for a fun-filled day of snow sports.
For those who are unfamiliar with VASS, they’re a non-profit society that operates ski and snowboard programs for people with disabilities, making the mountain experience accessible to all. For more information please visit vass.ca
