Larry Berg Flight Path Park Opens

Today is a very exciting day as YVR officially opens the new and improved Larry Berg Flight Path Park to the public!

The park is located at the corner of Russ Baker Way and Airport Road, directly in line with the end of the south runway, making at a prime location to plane spot. Over the course of the past three months, contractors have been working hard to complete the park in time for the community to enjoy while there is still some sunshine left in 2013.

There have been many upgrades and interpretive elements added to this treasured green community gathering space:

A raised central plaza featuring a giant globe is the focal point of the park. Celebrating YVR's role in connecting British Columbia with the entire world, the globe is meant to be climbed and explored. Tail wings which feature historical YVR facts and fun, educational aviation statistics tell you the story of YVR and why it is one of the best airports in the world.

Small hills and berms have been added to allow for better views and a viewing platform has been created to provide a spot to see the runway over top of the perimeter fence. Information boards describe some of the identifying features to look for so that even novice plane spotters can identify the aircraft overhead.

The walking trails have been added and the runways paths have been enhanced and stylized to reflect the markings and lights of real runways.

The existing memorial benches have been incorporated into the design of the park. These new benches are made form recycled material and are there for people to sit, reflect and enjoy the park.

The picnic tables have also been updated and new paper airplane style benches add to the theme of the park.

It's the perfect place for a family picnic on a sunny day, or to park and watch the planes soar overhead as they depart and arrive from their destinations all over the planet. We are very excited to have revitalized this wonderful family space and to created a place that is a legacy to Larry Berg, former CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority from 1998 - 2013.

We hope you enjoy the improved Larry Berg Flight Path Park!

Casually going through the park at dusk, I was awed to the light augmentations the park’s runways underwent; the lights add such an enchanting realism. Kudos to whoever came up with that idea.

My husband and I enjoy plane-spotting here, and we took our 3 year-old daughter here in July.  Very excited to see the updates!

I remember years ago my dad would drive the family from Vancouver and spend the day going to the airport, now the South Terminal. What a change over the years and now I bring my grand kids to this lovely park, watch the planes and kick the ball around and have a picnic.

Kudos for everyone involved in making the project and a big thank you to Larry berg for a job well done over the years

Can anyone explain why all those lights on the mini-runways have been taped over now?

Great to hear! The photos look awesome! I planning on coming out to yvr! Is public grandeur available to the flight path park?
