Outreach. Education. Community Involvement. They’re three (OK, four) words that mean a lot to us here at YVR. So, it’s only natural that we were so thrilled to be recognized by a global industry association for our work to make those words more than, well, words.
Last month, Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) honoured YVR with a prestigious Environmental Achievement Award for our work to reduce airport waste and contribute to the local community.
The award recognizes our partnership with Quest Food Exchange, a Vancouver-based organization which assists low-income individuals and families to overcome their barriers with dignity. Last February, Vancouver Airport Authority launched the partnership with Quest and began its work to engage the entire YVR community in the important cause to reduce food waste in the landfills and increase the number of mouths fed in the Lower Mainland. To date, the YVR community has donated $120,000 in cash through fundraising initiatives and sponsorship and donated more than $125,000 worth (approx 1,650kg) of food.
It’s a win-win, we’d say.
This month, the Airport Authority and YVR employees are coming together again in support of Quest. We’re marking up our Thanksgiving shopping lists with some extra items – pumpkin pie filling here we come! – to help fill Christmas hampers for 500 Quest clients who’ll need a little help this December.
