Give us your Observations

YVR’s Observation Area turns two years old in July 2011, so we think it’s time for a little refreshment.  This popular space for viewing airfield activity is used every day by employees, travellers, aviation enthusiasts and community groups.  The must-have telescopes will remain along with the information panels at the window and the model of Sea Island. However there is a small space free’d up for something new and opportunities to update the touch-screen kiosk activities.

Frequent visitors to the Observation Area may have noticed the BC Explorer, a virtual fly-through of British Columbia, was removed. On loan from the Provincial Government, this has been returned so it frees up a space approximately 4’x 4’.   In addition, the information on the three touch-screen kiosks could do with a refresh. Currently the interactive kiosks illustrate various aspects of the YVR story, including jobs at the airport and the past, present and future growth of YVR. As well, visitors can listen to air traffic control communication, watch a live monitor of airborne planes in the region, follow the journey of their luggage and see where in the world they can fly to directly from YVR.

We want to hear from you to get ideas for elements that will engage and educate the community about our award winning airport. Perhaps in your travels overseas you have visited an airport, museum or activity centre that left a lasting impression on you.  There are so many great ideas but we want to hear from you. Ideas taken forward must meet certain criteria, for example: must be relevant to aviation and YVR, child-safe, size appropriate, low maintenance and within budget, to name a few.

Provide your ideas in the comment section below, or by clicking on the blog title above, by June 30, 2011.  All ideas will be reviewed and a short list provided on in July for the community to vote on.

Here are some initial ideas to get your creative minds going.

  • Children’s flight deck play area
  • Aviation-themed photo “stand-in”
  • Interactive/virtual flight experience
  • Virtual tour of YVR
  • Aviation-themed art/artifact/memorabilia display
