Find out why we're one of B.C.'s Top Employers

This month, Vancouver Airport Authority was recognized as one of B.C.’s Top Employers for the seventh year in a row.  But what makes this a great place to work?

Recently, I asked two kids who were playing at the airport, what do you want to be when you grow up?   One answered "a pilot" and the younger brother answered "an airplane."  When I asked if they wanted to work at the airport they looked a bit puzzled – but they have no clue how many interesting and varied jobs there are here.

So I went straight to the source and asked a few of our employees why they thought we were one of B.C.’s Top Employers, what their job entails, and most importantly, why they love it!

Kevin Hong, Safety Advisor

Kevin describes the airport as “a small city” and loves the diversity and breadth of his job.  “No day is exactly the same.”  Kevin is the guy who helps ensure our safety.  He deals with preventative issues from respiratory and hearing to infectious disease and even ergonomics (he sets up our desks so we are happy and comfortable).  “The safety culture here is one of the best parts of my job.  People support it and want to do the right thing.”   But I think Kevin says it best when he ends with “YVR is a pretty cool place to work!”

Bowinn Ma, Project Engineer

As YVR continues to grow, our engineering department is expanding too.  Bowinn (Pictured at far left in photo) started at the Airport Authority in April and is one of the key members working towards building a better airport.  But it’s not all work and no play for Bowinn.  She says “In addition to being a 24-hour airport operation, YVR is a giant playground for engineers.”  And who doesn’t want to play at work?  Like Kevin, Bowinn also describes our “stupendous safety program” as one of the top reasons she enjoys working for the Airport Authority.   “The Airport Authority is constantly upgrading, renovating, improving, and adding to everything on Sea Island in order to improve the experience for our passengers and community.” So think of Bowinn and her team the next time you visit and notice a new upgrade or building.

David Bradbeer, Wildlife Program Specialist

David’s job is certainly unique.  He only recently started to work for the Airport Authority and is “excited to be a part of an organization that has taken a strong leadership role in wildlife management at airports.”  What people may not realize is the importance of David’s role in maintaining a balance between safety and environmental conservation priorities.  “YVR has a world-class Wildlife Management Program that is designed to maintain safe aircraft operations whilst contributing to wildlife conservation.”  But most importantly David says “wildlife is fascinating to me and I enjoy putting my expertise into practice here at YVR.”
