YVR strives to be a leader in environmental management. Our primary goal is to build, maintain and operate a safe and environmentally sustainable airport. As part of this, we have a long standing commitment to energy efficiency and have developed a long-term energy strategy to reduce our energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions 33 per cent by 2020.

 

Time for some energy efficient fun facts!

  • Just like you, we turn off the lights when we aren’t using them -- for us that means turning off the lights in the seating areas inside the terminal when there are no flights. We also turn off baggage systems and moving walkways when they are not in use.
  • Since 1999, we’ve seen cumulative energy savings of more than $15 million in electrical and gas costs from investing in energy-efficient initiatives.
  • Talk about long term goals! We reduced 30% in electrical and 48% in natural gas intensity between 1997 and 2016.
  • While we’re on the topic of longevity- YVR was the first Power Smart Certified customer in BC in 2002.

 

YVR’s latest initiative is the installation of a new state-of-the-art LED lighting system to its airfield. This system significantly reduces our power consumption, expands lighting coverage and most importantly, increases safety for our pilots, air traffic controllers and ground crews. With this new lighting system, we are saving 715,000 kWhrs per year (that’s enough to power 72 residential households a year)!

 

The new system by Musco Lighting is retrofitted to YVR’s existing structures, providing high-quality light that is applied only where needed and darkness is preserved where light is not intended. This also helps streamline operations and improve safety with its patented glare control technology.
