Richmond Maritime Festival was ARRRRRRRsome!

Hello, YVR connectors! Jake here, reporting on an ARRRRsome weekend at the 10th Annual Maritime Festival.

Every year thousands of people gather at the Britannia ship yards to celebrate the rich maritime history of the area, close to the shores of YVR.

The Maritime Festival had something for everyone. The popular YVR Community Stage was rocking all weekend featuring performances from The Nautical Miles, The Wild Moccasin Dancers, Ruby’s Uke’s, Roku Shichi Taiko, and the Steveston Folk Mob.

To help mark the celebration, 180 people gathered to sing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record in the category of nursery rhyme relay. The Richmond maritime singers exceeded the previous record of 154 and have submitted the attempt to the Guinness Organization for final review.

It is no Boeing 777 but I must admit the Lady Washington was a pretty spectacular pirate ship. Festival attendees lined up to take a tour of this famous ship which was piloted by Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean Film series and featured on “Once Upon a Time” a TV series filmed in Steveston. Hip Hop aficionados might recognize this as the backdrop in Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ music video “Can’t Hold Us”.

A big “thank you” to everyone who came by the YVR Community tent to say “hi”. We had a great time conducting the YVR Fun Facts Quiz, hearing about your travel adventures and making paper airplanes with all you plane spotters. Can’t wait till next year!

Pirate Joke: Why can’t pirates learn the Alphabet? Because they always get stuck at “C”!
