From the Guy
Leaving things to the last second can be good for some tasks (writing Valentine's Day blog posts, winning basketball games) but when it comes to buying gifts for romantic holidays, it is a less-than-desirable trait. Luckily I work at YVR, where forgetful boyfriends and husbands are rescued annually by the wide array of products readily available for you to buy right before you board a flight home or head home after work on Valentine's Day.
Flowers and chocolates doesn't scream originality but it's also a very tried, tested and true gift package. The Vancouver Airport Florist has the classic dozen roses bouquet as well as a number of more modern takes on the Valentine's arrangement for the less traditional. For chocolate, Daniel Le Chocolat Belge pre-security has plenty of options, or Roger's Chocolate post-security on C Pier is perfect for those who forgot to pack gifts in their carry-on and need something right off the plane when they arrive home.
I'm a big fan of experiential gifts, where the receiver gets a memory instead of a dust-collector. Think concert tickets or a cooking lesson as opposed to an iTunes gift card or a set of crock pots (never a good idea, apparently). Absolute Spa always has packages available for manicures and pedicures or just a relaxing massage. They have multiple locations at YVR, pre and post-security, so if you happen to be on-site for V-Day you could provide some in-terminal pampering.
Not that you wouldn't buy your significant other jewellery unless you were in trouble for something, but the earrings/watch/necklace/ring is definitely reccommended if you maybe forgot something special last year. Taraxca Jewellery on Domestic Departures level 3 or the Gallerie store post-security on C Pier have everything you need. And of course World Duty Free has some amazing items if you are flying out internationally and need to grab something extra special.
From the Gal
Buying gifts for men can be challenging at the best of times, and trying to find the perfect mix of romantic and manly for Valentine’s Day can prove too much for even the most intrepid female shopper. That’s why this Valentine’s Day, I recommend skipping the romance and honing in on what that special guy might want. And, if like me, you’re a seasoned day-of shopper (aka last-minute planner), here’s a few gifts that can fit any budget that you can buy right here at YVR.
On a budget
You may like wine, but the way to a guy’s heart is often through beer. Pick up various types at Westcoast Liquor Store located in the Domestic Terminal Arrivals Level One.
Slightly more to spend
For the guy that loves anything tech, gizmo related, or just plain cool, a remote controlled helicopter will do the trick. Visit Toyland if you are hopping on a domestic flight out of C Pier, located near Gate 26.
Cash burning a hole in your wallet
You can’t go wrong with the ultimate male accessory - a watch. Gallerie Vancouver, located in C Pier near Gate 27 has a variety of timepieces from classic to ultra-trendy. Adding a little style to your guy’s wardrobe is that easy!
Any couple looking for an extra special night can take advantage of the Fairmont Vancouver Airport's Romance Takes Flight package, which includes an amazing meal, flowers, chocolate-covered strawberries and one night's stay at the luxurious hotel.
