A perfect mini-vacay just 30 minutes from YVR? Yes, please! MSN Canada recently named Victoria as the #1 destination for an amazing weekend getaway.
Victoria offers a perfect laid-back weekend that allows you to truly feel like you’ve gotten away from it all. The inner harbor is serviced directly from YVR by HarbourAir and West Coast Air from our float plane facility and Helijet at Airport South. You can leave the office, head straight to the airport and be sitting in a lounge sipping cocktails within the hour.
Whether you’re into art, adventure, history or food – Victoria offers a great variety of activities that will allow you kick back and relax – no car necessary.
Here are a few (of the many) ideas to make for a great getaway:
Did you know that North America’s narrowest commercial street is located in Victoria? Explore Fan Tan Alley, which measures only 0.9 metres at its narrowest point, in Victoria’s Chinatown. Once a gambling district, Chinatown is home to a variety of unique shops, restaurants and galleries. Be sure to visit Silk Road’s tea tasting bar, complete with lessons and sampling.
One of the most iconic buildings in Victoria is The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Take a tour of this historic hotel (offered by several local tour operators) followed by Afternoon Tea at the Empress. Tea at the Empress is a time-honoured tradition and will have you feeling like a queen (or king) with impeccable service and a sumptuous selection of teas, finger sandwiches, scones, preserves, Jersey cream and sweet treats.
Feeling slightly more adventurous? Take to the sea with a whale watching tour. Several companies offer visitors the opportunity to view orcas, gray and humpback whales, as well as sea lions, porpoises and other marine species at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve – Canada’s first Marine Protected Area.
Once you’ve spent the day exploring Victoria, be sure to head to one of Victoria’s 770 restaurants for a fantastic meal. Whether it’s the Empress’ famed curry bar at The Bengal Lounge or Il Terrazzo for its popular Italian food, you’ll be thoroughly satisfied.
