2012 saw several major milestones for YVR’s routes and services, building additional connections between British Columbia and the rest of the world – I described some of the highlights in last month’s edition of President’s Perspective, available here: See what's coming next year
2013 is poised to be an equally busy year for route and service development at YVR. The Airport Authority will continue to focus on the 10-year strategy to build a better airport for B.C. Inherent in this strategy is our commitment to attracting new routes and carriers.
Beginning in May, Lufthansa will offer a seasonal daily non-stop service from Vancouver to Munich. Munich is currently one of Vancouver’s top 10 origin and destination European markets, and this daily service will make travel even easier between Vancouver and this European cultural hotspot. And Virgin Atlantic has announced the British are coming back in 2013, after a highly successful debut year of its seasonal route between London and Vancouver.
Increased frequencies to the U.S. include daily flights to New York offered by Delta Airlines and a seasonal weekend service by United Airlines to Washington, D.C.
During YVR’s current winter peak period, Air Canada and Air New Zealand have increased frequencies to Australia and New Zealand to help make these southern sun destinations more accessible.
A significant part of YVR’s 10-year gateway strategy is to expand its services to Asia-Pacific and be the gateway of choice to connect to Asia-Pacific. YVR has added two Chinese carriers in the past two years (China Southern and Sichuan Airlines), making it home to more Chinese carriers than any other airport in North America. In the past 10 years, our airport has more than doubled its offering of departing flights to China during the peak summer season, during which 40 flights are scheduled each week.
We’re proud of the variety of destinations served by airlines operating at YVR. Connecting B.C. to more than 160 destinations worldwide is a testament to the commitment of our airline partners to offer great services, the tenacity of the Airport Authority’s aviation development team in attracting new services and the support of local and international customers for travelling through YVR.
