President's Perspective: August 2012

As we move towards our busiest time of the year—the third weekend in August—the activity for Vancouver Airport Authority isn’t just taking place in the terminals. We’re also out in the community, supporting causes that resonate for our business, our employees, our home town of Richmond, and our province.

The Airport Authority’s community focus for the next month or two is on kids and our enviable waterfront location here in Richmond at the mouth of the Fraser River and on the Strait of Georgia.

The first annual YVR Airside Emergency Services Pancake Breakfast will be taking place on Wednesday, August 15 at the Templeton Canada Line Station. Our own emergency responders will be flipping flapjacks and serving up breakfast to employees in support of B.C.’s Burn Camp. Also focusing on youth is the 21st annual YVR for Kids golf tournament on August 23, which has raised more than $3 million for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and other local children’s charities. It brings together our airport community in a way that supports young people facing significant challenges.

Ports are important economic generators…whether they are airports or seaports. So we are again proud to sponsor the City of Richmond’s Maritime Festival, celebrating Steveston’s waterfront heritage on the weekend of August 10–12, 2012 at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard. In keeping with the maritime theme, we encourage everyone to team up and pick up debris as part of the Vancouver Aquarium’s Shoreline Cleanup next month. YVR is the proud provincial sponsor, and kick off events will take place at our own Iona Beach on Sea Island on September 15.

Whether you are flying or sticking close to home, we hope to see you at YVR or at one of these Airport Authority-sponsored events.
