President’s Perspective: June 2012

It’s hard to believe that the busy summer travel season is almost upon us. As kids are just wrapping up the school year, we are focused on a number of different projects here in the terminal, on Sea Island, and out in the community. And they aren’t all directly related to aviation…

Take-Off Fridays, our popular entertainment and tasting program for Fridays throughout the summer, is about to launch on July 6. The family fun is expanding throughout the airport, with activities in the domestic, international and U.S. departure areas. We encourage Lower Mainland residents to hop on Canada Line and join us for face painting, plane spotting in the Observation Area and treat tasting in the food courts.

Later this summer, you may notice some heavy equipment on a site just south of BCIT Aerospace Technology Campus on Russ Baker Way. Construction crews are preparing ground for a luxury designer outlet that we are planning to build in partnership with a leading retail centre developer from the UK. We’re looking forward to 1,000 more jobs on Sea Island, as well as to keeping B.C. shopping dollars here in our local economy.

And speaking of shopping, it’s a final boarding call for pennies until June 28 as part of YVR’s latest fundraising effort for Quest Food Exchange. Local community businesses are invited to gather those unused pennies that collect in the bottom of purses and drawers and put them to good use. Funds will provide lunches to local children in need who rely on lunch programs during the school year, but who don’t have access to those services during the summer.

A special thanks to all the businesses on Sea Island who help us help our local community.
