A commited community partner, Vancouver Airport Authority has supported BCIT Aerospace students for many years by giving donations and scholarships, as well as providing employee expertise in programs such as aircraft maintenance and airport marketing.
In November, Brett Patterson, Vancouver Airport Authority’s Director of Airside Operations, and Frank O’Neill, past President and CEO of YVR Airport Services, presented the 2011 Airport Authority scholarship awards to three deserving students.
The inaugural Frank O’Neill Award for Excellence in Airport Operations was presented by Mr. O’Neill to Jastine Chen, a first year airport operations student. This $2,500 award is donated by Vancouver Airport Authority in recognition of O’Neill’s valuable contribution to aviation – a career that ranged from working as an air traffic controller in Toronto, to Transport Canada in Ottawa, to YVR’s Airport Manager and most recently past President of YVR Airport Services. In addition, O’Neill implemented the Sense of Place concept using Northwest Coast Aboriginal art to establish an identifiable brand for YVR. O’Neill also introduced the Green Coat volunteer customer service program in 1989.
Patterson also attended the awards ceremony and presented two further Airport Authority awards – one to Airport Operations first-year student Christopher Fitzpatrick, as well as the Pat Plouffe Memorial Award in Airport Operations to Joanne Hsu.
