YVR has been named an environmental leader in the areas of outreach, education and community involvement by Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA), an industry association representing airports in Canada and the U.S. Last month, ACI-NA honoured YVR with a prestigious Environmental Achievement Award for its work to reduce airport waste and contribute to the local community.
The award recognizes Vancouver Airport Authority’s partnership with Quest Food Exchange, which assists low-income individuals and families in the Lower Mainland to overcome their barriers with dignity and encourages self-sufficiency. Last February, the Airport Authority launched the partnership with Quest – initiated by its employee-led Green Team – and began its work to engage the entire YVR community in the cause.
As the Official Transportation Sponsor of Quest, the Airport Authority has donated $100,000 to Quest and encouraged business partners to participate.
Retail tenants such as Hudson Group, HMS Host, The Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Paradies Shops (which represent brands such as Hudson News, White Spot and BC Marketplace, respectively) have donated more than $125,000 in food and products.
Donations from the YVR community are re-packaged and sold at one of Quest’s three-low cost grocery stores.
This fall, Vancouver Airport Authority and the YVR community will continue to work together in the spirit of collaboration to support Quest with the provision of Christmas hampers for families in need.
