With summer drawing to a close and back to school banners decorating shop windows, for kids it’s time to swap the sunscreen and sandals for sharpened HP pencils and textbooks. For some lucky students, their back to school checklist may also include unusual items such as boarding passes and luggage.
The Airport Authority's School Tour Program The Future Lands Here launches its 2011 season on September 27, with tours for local grade 5 students running until November 24.
We’ve designed the program to give children an opportunity to learn about travel and aviation at YVR using practical, informative and interactive activities. Each tour starts at the Canada Line Templeton Station and after a short ride on the train, the students are given a terminal walk-through to learn about what they might experience if they’re travelling with their family. Other topics in the tour include understanding flight information displays, how to pack carry-on luggage for security screening, YVR’s connections to First Nations culture and history and some of the sustainable initiatives in place at the airport. A visit to the Public Observation Area is included, where students learn about airport operations from the unobstructed airfield view.
The popularity of the program continues to grow since its inception in 2009, and registration for this year’s program is nearing capacity. If you would like your class to participate, we encourage teachers to contact firstname.lastname@example.org to register.
