YVR staff, volunteer Green Coats, family and friends represented YVR in the annual Steveston Salmon Festival Canada Day Parade on July 1. The parade entry provided the rare opportunity for the public to see one of YVR’s unique airfield fire-fighting emergency trucks up close.
The OshKosh Striker 3000, usually confined to the airfield, amazed the thousands of onlookers that lined the streets of Steveston. Its sheer size, specialized design and the belting “whoop whoop” siren delighted kids and adults alike.
Celebrating YVR’s 80th birthday this month, the green-coated walkers flanked the fire truck and pilot car handing out stickers designed with a stylized graphic of the Sheet Metal Workers Rocket that greeted passengers at the front entrance to YVR in the 1930s. Eighty years later, a replica of the rocket can be seen in Vancouver’s centennial park at Cambie and 6th Avenue.
