Just like your home, YVR's runway system requires ongoing maintenance to keep it in top working condition. This is done throughout the year as a matter of course. However, for major projects, the south runway is temporarily closed at night during the summer months each year for the necessary repairs and upgrades that cannot be performed during regular daily maintenance.
This year, the south runway will be closed nightly between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. from July 3 to August 27 to allow work crews to complete the three-year lighting upgrade project. In addition, runway signage upgrades will be carried out at this time.
While the south runway is closed, the north runway will be used for all take-offs and landings during these hours. Once work is completed, normal operations will resume.
Although summer is the busiest time of the year for passenger traffic at YVR, it is also the best time of year for these upgrade projects. These projects require the coordinated effort of hundreds of Airport Authority employees and contractors within a short and intensive night-time period.
A five-year summer runway repairs schedule is posted at online at yvr.ca, along with more information about this and other construction projects at YVR.
