On June 15, there were two important happenings in Vancouver: one was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, and the other was the arrival of the inaugural China Southern flight from Guangzhou, China. While we have to wait a full year for another chance at the Cup, the flights to and from Guangdong province take place three times a week and are a welcome addition to our flight schedule here at YVR.
I’ve written many times here of the importance of building the gateway to Asia and its impact on the economy of Metro Vancouver, British Columbia and the country. Another part of that story is the cargo element that will soon see B.C. produce and other goods flying to Shanghai from YVR in July onboard China Southern all-cargo flights. These shipping connections are also very important to the vitality of our region.
Another way that your airport contributes to the health of Metro Vancouver is through our community activities. Whether through ensuring that there is a YVR Community Stage at major events such as Richmond’s Ships to Shore or at the Celebration of Light, Vancouver Airport Authority takes pride in supporting events and organizations that our local residents enjoy throughout the summer season.
And don’t forget to make YVR part of your summer plans, whether you are travelling out of town or not. Our popular Take-Off Fridays provide the community with an opportunity to take a break at their airport; to bring the family out to enjoy the Public Observation Area, great retail deals, face painting, entertainment and music.
I hope that you have a safe and enjoyable summer; we look forward to welcoming you at YVR.
