An airside water salute and in-terminal lion dance were just some of the festivities that greeted China Southern Airlines’ inaugural flight from Guangzhou to Vancouver on June 15.
Marking an important milestone in YVR’s continued plans to be a premier global gateway, China Southern’s new thrice-weekly service is the first and only nonstop flight from Canada to Guangdong, China’s most populous province and a key hub for foreign trade.
China Southern’s new service offers increased options for passengers and greater opportunities for business and tourism, particularly given Canada’s recent Approved Destination Status from China.
Not only will passengers benefit from this important new connection, but China Southern’s operations will generate considerable economic benefit for YVR. The flight will generate 44 person-years of employment and $2.2 million in wages, and contribute $3.5 million to British Columbia’s gross domestic product annually.
China Southern Airlines’ YVR service will use Boeing 777-200 aircraft, with capacity for 282 passengers. Flights will operate three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, arriving at YVR at 10:20 a.m. and departing nonstop toGuangzhou at 12 noon.
