The makings of a world-class airport are varied, from exceptional customer service to ease of transport to, from and through its terminals. For Vancouver Airport Authority, the quest to achieve greatness is never reached. Rather, it is an ongoing mission to continually evolve YVR as a true gateway to the world, and to create a facility with a unique and meaningful sense of place.
It is this drive to evolve and improve that, we believe, earned YVR the designation as Best Airport in North America – for the second year in a row – as part of the recent 2011 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The award is based on an independent and highly regarded survey that has particular meaning to the Airport Authority, because it was completed by our most important customers: passengers. More than 11.38 million of them responded and ranked 240 airports worldwide based on 39 criteria, such as airport accessibility, public transportation options, terminal comfort and ambience, friendliness of staff and choice of shopping.
Pivotal to our success in such a wide range of criteria are the strong partnerships in place amongst the 23,000 people who work on Sea Island every day. We share this award with our employees, volunteers, airline staff, government representatives, business partners and retailers.
These partnerships demonstrated success when the international spotlight shone upon YVR during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, when we showcased new facilities and services to the world. Passengers benefitted from a new Canada Line rapid transit system to efficiently move to and from YVR, and once here, experienced exciting attractions such as our Public Observation Area. They also experienced our long-standing commitment to unparalleled customer care, delivered by our staff and hundreds of volunteer Green Coat ambassadors. And they got a glimpse of our beautiful province, without even having to leave our terminals, thanks to our stunning architecture, landscaping and extensive art collection – all reflective of British Columbia’s landscape and people.
As we continue to build connectivity to the world and support passenger growth, the strength of our partnerships will be essential to our continued success.
